Snake Game Tips: Score Higher and Survive
Snake becomes difficult for one reason: every point removes free space from the board. High scores come from controlling that shrinking space deliberately, not from taking the shortest path to every piece of food.

How Arcadely Snake works
The snake moves continuously on a 19×19 board. Use arrow keys or WASD on a keyboard, or swipe on mobile. Eating food adds one point, lengthens the body, and gradually increases movement speed. Hitting a wall or any occupied body cell ends the run.
Space pauses the game. Use that pause when an interruption would otherwise waste a strong run—it is a game control, not a strategy shortcut.
Look at the next cell, not the head
Beginners follow the snake’s head with their eyes. A better habit is to watch the cell the head will enter next and the turn after that. This tiny shift creates time to notice a tail segment or wall before the collision is unavoidable.
At higher speed, enter the turn one cell earlier than feels necessary. The game accepts a queued perpendicular direction, but it cannot reverse directly into the body.
Keep the center available
The center offers the most escape directions, so do not fill it with a random knot early. Use long, orderly passes near the outer lanes while the snake is short, and cross the center only when you know where the tail will open space.
Food is a target, not an instruction. If the direct route creates a pocket, circle around and approach from a safer line. One extra lap costs nothing; a trapped head costs the entire run.
Understand the moving tail
On a normal step, the tail vacates one square as the head claims another. That means a lane occupied by the far end of your body may become safe by the time you reach it. When you eat, however, the tail does not move for that growth step.
Plan escapes around where the tail will be, not only where it is now. Following the tail at a safe distance is one of the most reliable ways to survive a crowded board.
Use a serpentine pattern late in the run
When the snake becomes long, sweep across the board in parallel rows, turning only at the edge and leaving one connecting lane. This serpentine pattern keeps the body ordered and prevents enclosed pockets.
Do not seal the connecting lane too early to grab food. Continue the pattern until the head can reach the food without crossing the body, then return to the sweep.
Common Snake mistakes
Fast double turns create small loops that the growing body cannot escape. Cutting across the board without checking the tail creates a second common trap. On touch screens, short, decisive swipes are safer than diagonal gestures that can be interpreted differently from what you intended.
- Do not turn toward food before checking the exit route.
- Do not occupy every row; preserve a lane that reconnects the board.
- Do not panic-swipe repeatedly as speed rises.
- Do not assume the tail moves on the same step that food is eaten.
Common questions
Does Snake get faster?
Yes. Arcadely’s Snake shortens the time between movement steps as your score increases, up to a controlled maximum speed.
Can the snake pass through walls?
No. The board has solid boundaries, so touching any edge ends the run.
Is a perfect Snake score possible?
The board can theoretically be filled, but doing so requires an extremely disciplined route. A consistent serpentine pattern is the safest approach to very long runs.
